Keep your Fresh Flowers longer with these tips.

Keep your Fresh Flowers longer with these tips.

The secret to keeping cut flowers looking good as long as possible is vodka! No joke add few drops of it to your vase of flowers. Vodka is said to have a different effect on flowers. The spirit’s ability to inhibit ethylene production, a ripening gas that helps plants mature, slows the wilting of the flowers. So while you’re mixing up a cocktail don’t forget about your grocery store bouquet

Ultimately you want to minimize the growth of bacteria in the water. Also providing nourishment to replace what the flower would have gotten had it not been cut. I have tried everything from aspirin to ACV here’s what I found works best:

⊹Remove all lower leaves from the water line down.

⊹Cut 1 to 2 inches off the stems at an angle.

⊹Add a few drops of vodka – it is often claimed to help flowers due to antimicrobial properties, it will also delay wilting by inhibiting a flower’s production of ethylene, a ripening gas that plants emit.

⊹Add in 1/4 cup soda – the sugar in soda is said to make your blooms last longer.

⊹Add 1/4 teaspoon bleach – this helps prevent your water from getting cloudy, and inhibits bacteria growth, both of which can cause your flowers to lose their freshness.

⊹Display your bouquet in a cool, draft-free area. Avoid direct sunlight, which causes the flowers to die sooner.

Last but certainly not least; put your bouquet in the fridge every night before bed! Now on colder nights you could put them outside (typically 8 hours per night.) Flowers thrive in cooler temperatures. It is thought that the low temps help slow the aging.

Change the water every day and re-cut the stems each time. Also refreshing the soda, vodka or bleach.

I have tried all of the methods above and all, with refrigeration work. Now I am not a florist. All different species of flowers sometimes call for different care. Double check with your florist or google.

Let me know what’s worked for you!
